Literally every day I wish I was deluded about COVID, about Democrats, about LLMs. Can you imagine the comfort of simply pissing your health away without any self awareness? Actually believing that there's a "good" political party in the United States? Thinking LLMs are actually going to "change everything"?

Like smoking cigarettes in the 50s and 60s: pure pleasure! "It's healthy!" they said. Doctors recommend it.

Hyperrealistic art is the art of our age. It's sterile, non-discursive, and a labor-intensive low-meaning copy of a photograph in most instances.

One can appreciate the athleticism involved (8,000 hrs!?!) while at the same time recognizing that the subject matter is banal and mundane and without importance.

But more importantly, without courage.

Creating meaningful art with a personal aesthetic is spiritually and emotionally dangerous. Hyperrealism requires none of that.

I sometimes do this thing where, during arguments involving data, I will misremember the specifics of a number while accurately conveying the import of that number.

Think "Biden killed 1.5 million people with his COVID policies!" when it was actually ~1 million people.

Something I find borderline disingenuous is how immediately the debate turns to one about how I am not reliable because I the number was *incorrect*, not about how I'm *right* because *killing 1 million people is fucking nuts*.

Basically: are people experiencing severe cognitive problems *because* of using LLMs, or are they using/vulnerable to LLMs because they've had COVID 5-10 times and have brain damage?

Disambiguating between these two phenomena seems important.

"This is not us" or "This is un-American" are like "that's hypocritical": they are substanceless critiques of substantial things, designed to present the aesthetic of opposition while forestalling any actual opposition.

What they have in common is they avoid even a hint of identifying the problem, and through this, pointing to potential solutions.

That way, they can exist as ephemeral expressions of sentiment, rather than calls for action or statements of intent.

Listen, I know we've gone through a period in the US in which a very successful crushing of ambition and agency has occurred. Honestly, neoliberals were so successful at cul-de-sac-ing US political radicalism that I think in their hubris they left room for Trump to rise up - whoops! as they say.

Basically, the injury would be emotional.

You know, it baffles me in a way nothing ever has that reality is one thing but 90% of humanity truly believes it is another.

And, that reality keeps *asserting* itself by harming them, and they continue to stumble with glazed eyes through the world, blaming their age or their diet or the moon or the faerie humours rather than what's really harming them.

The "half vs half" narrative of USian politics is a damn lie, and it serves the political class and the suborned punditry, and the more we talk about our political situation as "half vs half" more likely we are to find ourselves, despite it not being true, killing each other for no reason either of us can figure out.
