Totally self-taught. I've thought of taking university extension courses, but I'm pretty sure I break many "rules," and have no incentive to correct my ways.

#ScribesAndMakers ~ How did your month go?

#KonginiIdol is being uploaded EP by EP. It's all writing. So I've been a bit at loose ends, writing flash and working on two "new" novels.
"#Bijou the #TimeTravelingGhost," an Edgar Rice Burroughs X Jack Vance style pulp. I have mixed feelings about it. 20K is written. I need to do another polishing and adaptation pass for broader release. And I need #BetaReaders.
"#Airiusi: The Crow and the Witch." A Tanith Lee-style Mythpunk story. 5K written. The early release is getting favorable remarks. The main narrator is a #Crows, which is both fun and challenging to write.

#WordWeavers 2026.02.30 — Do you write scenes out of order? (Note the Date)

I write the book sequentially, the story non-sequentially. I start at the beginning of what I want to say and go until I reach the end. What I relate is not in chronological order from the character's point of view.

On occasion, I may decide a scene would work better later and may set aside what I have written until I reach that point.

I have tried non-sequential writing, but the pieces never fit together. I find it too hard to maintain a smooth narrative flow, piecing together pieces.

I do:

Pros:

It makes editing easier later.
I have a better idea of what I am trying to say, so rearranging words and sentences is easier.
I am more likely to notice that I have omitted something.
I am used to it.
It slows me down a bit so I am clear of where I am going.

Con:

Very occasionally, it will stall the creative juices.
Judged by people who write and edit later.

#PennedPossibilities 943 — Can you think of any real-life people who share traits with the characters in your WIP? How do these similarities affect your perception of the characters?

Sure. They would feel like real people if they didn't share traits with real people. (I write human characters.)

I don't do false parallels unless the parallels are deliberate. In which they don't affect my perception, they are my perception. Identical.

Shishi is the only character that falls into this camp. I loved the idol she was based on, and I love Shishi.

The beggar woman sat in a shaded corner. Her cheeks were sallow from her #inadaquet diet of rice, wild grasses, and scraps that people left her. Years of poverty had eaten away at her #flesh until she appeared to be little more than a skeleton under many layers of her tattered robes.

As people walked by, she held out a bowl containing a few stray coins. Accustomed as they were to beggars, her missing arm evoked little sympathy. It was better not to notice beggars.

Her eyes remained dull until children happened by, and then she came alive. From her robes, she would produce bright strings of flags with a dexterity that belied her emaciation. If the parents looked to have money, she produced a dove to delight the child. This might secure her a few more coins, which she would carefully hide to avoid being robbed. The courtesans of Verdigris House and neighboring brothels called her The Flag Lady or just Flag.

Truthfully, she did well at her trade—both of them.
